The Unexpected Messiah – VIDEO

Psalm 23: 1 – 6 (ESV)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23: 1 (ESV)

Psalm 23: 4 (ESV)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

John 10: 1 – 6 (NLT)

“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”  Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant.

John 10: 7 – 15 (NLT)

So he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.  11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. 12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.  13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

Your men will turn their swords against each other. 22 I will punish you and your armies with disease and bloodshed; I will send torrential rain, hailstones, fire, and burning sulfur! 23 In this way, I will show my greatness and holiness, and I will make myself known to all the nations of the world. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

THE SPIRIT & THE WORD- Doing Life With the Spirit // Sunday, October 8, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Doing Life with The Spirit;

The Spirit & The Word

Jesus explains the nature of God’s kingdom:

     1.  Spirit - God is spirit.

For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.                            John 4: 24 (NLT)

     2.  Truth - God’s word is truth.

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.     John 17: 17 (ESV)

The dangers of Imbalance

1.  If we only want the Spirit.

Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.    Matthew 22: 29 (NLT)

2.  If we only want the Word:

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.

                        2 Corinthians 3: 6 (NLT)

The Book of Acts without the Word.

1.               There would be no 12th disciple.

(Matthias – Acts 1: 12 – 26)

Acts 1: 16 & 20 (NLT)

“Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David...

Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.’ It also says, ‘Let someone else take his position.

      2. Would 3000 people

have been saved on the Day of

        Pentecost?      (Acts 2: 14 – 42)

Acts 6: 8 – 8: 1

3.               Would Steven have been chosen?

Acts 6: 8 – 8: 1

4.               Would Saul have been converted?

Acts 8: 26 - 40

5. Would the Ethiopian be saved?

Acts 8: 30 & 31 (NLT)

Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?”  And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.

The Book of Acts without the Spirit.

      1.  Would 3000 people

have been saved on the Day of Pentecost?      (Acts 2: 1 - 13)

Acts 2: 6 (NLT)

When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

    2.  Would 5000 people have been saved when Peter preached in the temple?  (Acts 3:1 - 4: 4)

Acts 3: 6 (NLT)

Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,  get up and walk!”

Acts 4: 4 (NLT)

But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of believers now totaled about 5,000 men, not counting women and children.

2.               The Spirit’s ministry was a

witness to non-believers.   (Acts 5)

Acts 5: 12 – 15 (NLT)

The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade.  13 But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. 14 Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord —  crowds of both men and women. 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Life

Romans 10: 9 & 10 (ESV)

HOW TO STAY FULL OF THE SPIRIT- Doing Life With the Spirit // Sunday, October 1, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Sunday, October 1, 2023

Doing Life with The Spirit;

How to Stay Full of The Spirit

Ephesians 5: 15 - 18 (NLT)

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

1.               Pray

Acts 4: 31 (NASB)

And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

Jude 20 (NASB)

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14: 4 (NASB)

The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

2.               Repent

Psalm 66: 18 (NASB)

If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear.

Psalm 66: 18 (NLT)

If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.

1 John 1: 8 & 9 (NASB)

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

2 Timothy 3: 1 – 5 (NASB)

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.

1            Corinthians 7: 18 - 20 (ESV)

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.  19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

3.               Ask

Luke 11: 11 – 13 (NLT)

“You fathers — if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! 13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

Matthew 5: 6 (NASB)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

Doing Life with The Spirit;

What the Holy Spirit Does for Us

The Holy Spirt Motivates Unity in the Body of Christ.

How can we succeed at living in unity?

1)              Develop the right attitude.

2)              Detemine to work at unity.

3)              Delight in the purpose of unity

4)              Discover the value of the diversity of gifts and personalities.

5)  Dedicate yourself to serve others.

Ephesians 4: 12 & 13 (NLT)

Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

Philippians 2: 1 – (NLT)

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.   4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.   5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.   7 Instead, he gave up his divine privilege; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,  8he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Doing Life with The Spirit;

What the Holy Spirit Does for Us

The Holy Spirit…

1.               Is a seal

2.               The first installment of the believer’s inheritance.

3.               The Spirit of Wisdom & Revelation.

4.               Helps the believe draw near to God.

5.               Builds the body of believers into a holy temple.

6.               Strengthens the believer with power in the inner being.

7.               Motivates unity in the body of Christ.

Ephesians 4: 1 (NLT)

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.

a.               Jesus calls us to walk in unity.

John 13: 34 & 35 (NLT)

I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.  35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

b. How can we succeed at living in unity?

1)              Develop the right attitude.

Ephesians 4: 2 (NLT)

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.

2)              Detemine to work at unity.

Ephesians 4: 3 (NLT)

3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

REMEMBER:  It’s the work of the Spirit

3)              Delight in the purpose of unity

Ephesians 4: 4 – 6 (NLT)

4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. 5There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

4)              Discover the value of the diversity of gifts and personalities.

Ephesians 4: 7, 11 – 13 (NLT)

7 However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ.  11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles,

the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work   and build up the church, the body of Christ.  13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

Doing Life with The Spirit;

The Person of the Holy Spirit –

What He Does for Us

John 14: 16 (NASB)

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever.

Helper – He is personally sent to actively assist.

The Holy Spirit will helps us mature

Ephesians 4: 21 – 23 (NLT)

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Romans 12: 2 (NLT)

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

How did Jesus describe the Holy Spirit?

John 14: 17 (NASB)

The Helper is the Spirit of truth,

John 16: 12 & 13 (NASB)

    He will guide you into all the truth;

How does the  Holy Spirit guide us?

  1. Through the Bible

Hebrews 4: 12 & 13 (NLT)

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.  It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

  1. Through Christian fellowship

1 Thessalonians 5: 9 – 11 (NLT)

For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ,  not to pour out his anger on us. 10 Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Hebrews 10: 23 – 25 (NLT)

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together,   as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Proverbs 27: 17 (NASB)

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

John 14: 25 & 26 (NASB)

He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.

How?

  1. The Bible

2 Timothy 3: 16 & 17 (NLT)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

  1. Through the Church

Ephesians 4: 11 – 16 (NLT)

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.  12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

John 16: 8 (NASB)

…And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment:

  1. Holy Spirit convinces the world of sin.

  1. The Holy Spirit convicts YOU of sin.

Romans 8: 1 & 2 (NLT)

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

Hebrews 12: 5 & 6 (NLT)

“My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. 6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

Doing Life with The Spirit

The Person of the Holy Spirit - Plus

Can we biblically support our belief about the Holy Spirit?

Pneumatology

Why is this important?

1.               We don’t want to believe something that is not biblical.

2.               We need to know WHY we believe what we believe AND be prepared to defend it.

John 16: 5 - 7 (NLT)

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.  Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come.

Comforter (KJV)     Helper (NASB)

If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

Helper – He is personally sent to actively assist.

How Jesus Described the Holy Spirit

John 16: 12 & 13 (NASB)

“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Prophecy – prophēteia:

Practical instructions on the interpretation of Scripture, but particularly on the Kingdom of God and the Gospel.

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. THE TRINITY pt 2- Doing Life With the Spirit // Sunday, July 23, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Doing Life with The Spirit

The Trinity II

1.               Western Christianity

God Eternally and Necessarily Exists as the Trinity:

John 1: 1 – 3 (NLT)

Father & Son

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.

Genesis 1: 2 (NLT)

Holy Spirit

The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

If all three members of the Trinity are Equally & Fully Divine,

then all three existed Eternally,

and God has eternally existed as a Trinity.

John 17: 5 (NLT)

Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

God can not be other than He is,

For He is unchanging…

Malachi 3: 6 (NLT)

I am the Lord, and I do not change…

3 Essential Summary Statements:

1.               God is three persons.

2.               Each person is fully God.

3.               There is only one God.

Deuteronomy 6: 4 & 5 (NASB)

Exodus 20: 3

The Shema

“Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is oneAnd you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Exodus 15: 11 (NLT)

Moses sings…

“Who is like you among the gods, O Lord— glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders?

God is Unique…   Water Spirits…

1 Kings 8: 60 (NLT)

Then people all over the earth will know that the Lord alone is God and there is no other.

When God speaks – He alone is speaking – He is NOT speaking as one God among three who are to be worshipped.

Isaiah 45: 5 – 6 (NLT)

I am the Lord; there is no other God. I have equipped you for battle, though you don’t even know me,   6 so all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am the Lord, and there is no other.

He calls everyone on earth to turn to Him:

Isaiah 45: 21 & 22 (NLT)

YHWH Challenging Israel over Idols…

For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me. 22 Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other.

Why is the doctrine of the Trinity important?

Is it really essential to hold to the full deity of the Son and Holy Spirit?

Each person in the Trinity has a unique role / function.

Creation:

Genesis 1 & 2

God spoke the creative words to bring the universe into existence.

Colossians 1: 16 (NLT)

Jesus carried out the Father’s creative decrees…

16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see —such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.

Genesis 1: 2 (NLT)

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Apparently sustaining and manifesting God’s immediate presence in His creation.

Psalm 33: 6 (NLT)

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.

Redemption:

God planned redemption and sent His Son into the world…

John 3: 16 & 17 (ESV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Also:

Galatians 4: 4 & Ephesians 1: 9 & 10

Jesus obeyed the Father and accomplished redemption…

John 6: 38 (NLT)

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.

Neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit died for our sins…

The Holy Spirit is the One who gives us regeneration or new spiritual life…

John 3: 5 – 7 (NLT)

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.   6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’

After Jesus ascended, He said we would receive the Holy Spirit…

John 14: 26 (NLT)

Holy Spirit sent by the Father…

Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.  26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit — he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 16: 7 (NLT)

Jesus will send the Holy Spirit…

it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

John 15: 26 (NLT)

“But I will send you the Advocate- the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

The Holy Spirit reminds us of Christ’s teachings and continues the work of Redemption…

The Holy Spirit also sanctifies us…

Romans 8: 13 (NLT)

For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

The Holy Spirit empowers us for service…

Acts 1: 8 (NLT)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere — in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In general, the work of the Holy spirit sees t be to bring to completion the work that ha been planned by the Father and begun by the Son.

John 3: 18 (ESV)

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
