HOLY WEEK JOURNEY // MAUNDY THURSDAY

Resurrection-blog.jpg

Maundy Thursday: On Maundy Thursday, believers remember the last meal Jesus Christ had with His disciples prior to His arrest and crucifixion. It is often called The Last Supper.  First, Jesus predicts what will happen on the next day. Second, Jesus gives His followers symbols of remembrance for His body and His blood sacrificed on behalf of all mankind. (Matthew 26: 17 - 29). Third, Jesus provides a very important principle for living a Christian life: the greatest are those who serve others, not those who expect to be served (Luke 22: 26).

Then Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray as He waited for His hour to come. It was here that Jesus, having been betrayed by Judas, was arrested and taken to several sham trials (Luke 22: 54 – 23: 25). Jesus endured six trials. Three of the trials were by Jewish leaders and three by the Romans (John 18: 12 - 14,  Mark 14: 53 - 65,  Mark 15: 1 - 5, Luke 23: 6 - 12,  Mark 15: 6 - 15).

HOLY WEEK JOURNEY // HOLY WEDNESDAY

Holy Wednesday: Tonight, Wednesday, April 8th, beginning at 6:00 pm, Pastor Jeff will have a Mid-Week devotional on the Beatitudes. Though not one of Jesus’ teachings during Holy Week, there is great peace in understanding God’s blessings for His sons & daughters (Matthew 5: 1 - 11). You will find Pastor Jeff’s devotional at:

HOLY WEEK JOURNEY // HOLY TUESDAY

Resurrection-blog.jpg

Holy Tuesday:  On Holy Tuesday, the conspiracies to trap Jesus escalated. Israel’s religious leaders had one goal: to get rid of Jesus of Nazareth. If this meant cooperating with a lifelong enemy, any means would be justified. So the Pharisees—who opposed Rome and its intrusion on the Jewish way of life—and the Herodians, supporters of Herod the Great, joined forces. Even the Sadducees—religious liberals who denied a resurrection, angels, or spirits—attempted to discredit Jesus. (Matthew 22).  Jesus warned the crowds and disciples about the hypocrisy and unbelief of the nation’s religious leaders. (Matthew 23: 1 - 12). Jesus pronounced seven condemnations (“Woes”) addressing the false religion that was abhorrent to God (Matthew 23: 13 - 36).

Jesus grieves over the spiritual condition of Jerusalem (Matthew 23: 37 - 39).

HOLY WEEK JOURNEY // HOLY MONDAY

Resurrection-blog.jpg

Holy Monday: Following Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, He spent Sunday night in Bethany, the village at the foot of Mount of Olives (Matthew 21: 17). As Jesus returned on Monday to Jerusalem, He noticed a fig tree that had produced leaves ahead of season. But since the fig tree bore leaves, He expected to find figs, yet it was fruitless. Jesus cursed the tree and it withered the next day. (Matthew 21: 18 - 22) Another event of Holy Monday is the Temple cleaning. As part of prophesy, Jesus pronounced a symbolic judgment upon the irreverence for the Lord’s house of prayer (Isaiah 56: 7; Jeremiah 7: 11).

HOLY WEEK JOURNEY // PALM SUNDAY

PALM SUNDAY— April 5, 2020

John 3: 16 (ESV)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1. The HOPE of God’s LOVE.

Ephesians 3: 18 & 19 (NLT)
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

2. HOPE in God’s GIFT. ... that he gave…

Romans 5: 6 (NLT)
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Romans 3: 23 – 25 (NLT)
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

3. The HOPE of God’s OFFER. ...that whoever believes in him should not perish…

Romans 3: 22 (NLT)
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Titus 2: 11 (NLT)
...the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.

Colossians 3: 11 (NLT)
In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

4. The HOPE of God’s PROMISE. ...should not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 8: 23 (NLT)
And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

1 Peter 1: 3 - 5 (NLT)
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance — an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.

SERMON QUESTIONS:

1. Take a few minutes to REFLECT back on your salvation experience

  • What was it that drew you to Christ?

  • Who were the people that played a role in your salvation story?

  • How are you different now that Jesus is Lord of your life?

2. Take a few minutes to RECOGNIZE how far you’ve come in your walk with Christ.

  • (I used to be __________ but now I am _________)

  • (I used to believe ____________ but now I believe ___________)

  • ( I used to struggle with ______________ but now ________________)

3. If possible, take a few minutes to share your personal salvation story with your group.

Crisis Christianity

1 Peter 5: 7 (NLT) Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Philippians 4: 6 & 7 (NLT)   Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.  Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

UPDATE FROM PASTOR JEFF regarding Coronavirus, Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The Coronavirus has created a situation that is fluid, with quick and frequent changes that are designed to provide us with the best practices for successfully navigating this virus. La Porte Assembly desires  to be good citizens and do our part to help protect the health of our community.

Current guidelines limit gatherings to 10 people of less.  For this reason, La Porte Assembly will not gather in our sanctuary until proper protocols allow.

This Sunday, March 22nd beginning at 9:30 am we are offering an at home opportunity for a “church” experience. We will post a link on this website to our La Porte Assembly YouTube channel.  There you will discover a worship and teaching video that we’ve created.  Our desire is to maintain continuity in our connection with God and our church family. Pastor Ken and his team will lead a worship session. Pastor Roger will communicate valuable information detailing how we will do ministry moving forward. I will have a sermon for you to watch.

A separate video from Pastor Ryan and his team will provide a family devotional experience for those of you with young children.  This is going to be an excellent opportunity to gather as families…to foster family time that is centered around God and His word!

In the days and the weeks ahead, we will make additional changes to accommodate the needs of our community.  As a staff, our priority is to minister to you.  Please feel free to contact us if we may be of any assistance to you.

Psalm 91 is an excellent passage to focus on during this unique time we’re living in.  Verse one says:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

May you find your strength, comfort, hope and provision in Him!

In Christ’s service,

Pastor Jeff

STL T-SHIRTS ARE HERE!

Each year at LPAG we raise funds for Speed the Light. One easy way to give to either of these programs is to buy a “1 in 5,000” t-shirt. The Indiana District Youth Department has a goal of getting 5,000 people across the state to each donate $100 by buying one of their t-shirts. If you buy a t-shirt, you are 1 in 5,000! This is an awesome way to help missionaries around the world!

Buddy's 70th Birthday Bash

We had an AWESOME day celebrating Buddy’s birthday! We had a Water ‘N Wheel-athon after service, complete with the Flush-O-Nator! We had 11 kids earn their 1 in 5000 shirt! The rain held off until our event was over and the rainbow over Buddy is the perfect ending to a great day!

Pastor Jeff Hines named Indiana A/G "Shepherd of the Year".

Shepherd of Year3.jpg

Every May, the pastors and staff head to the state-wide annual business meetings for the Assemblies of God. These meetings, along with the business dealings, also celebrate the newly certified, licensed and ordained ministers throughout the state. We celebrate students who have completed levels in their Indiana School of Ministry training, and Pastor Don Gifford, as led by the Holy Spirit, picks one pastor from the entire state to be named the Shepherd of the Year. This year, La Porte Assembly had a lot of reasons to celebrate at District Council! First of all, our own Johanna Hines was presented with a Bible Certificate for taking (and excelling in) Bible classes through the school of ministry. Next, as a complete surprise to Pastor Jeff, Pastor Don chose our pastor to be the 2019 SHEPHERD OF THE YEAR. This is a huge honor that Pastor was completely humbled to receive. The rest of us (staff) were informed ahead of time and were able to invite our elders and deacons to drive to Lafayette to celebrate with him.

This is also Pastor Jeff’s 30th anniversary of ministry at La Porte Assembly. We are blessed by his commitment to our city and to us as a church! In honor of his 30 years, the board of elders has decided to build Pastor and Johanna a new deck for their home. If you are interested in being a part of celebrating his 30 years of ministry, we would love for you to write a few words of encouragement in a card and drop it in the box in the church foyer this Sunday (June 16th).

Thank you for taking time to love and honor our pastor! -LPAG staff

2019 Blessing of the Bikes

Saturday May 11 bikers from all over the region joined us for our annual bike blessing. Under the leadership and passion of Eli and Gina Russi over 50 motorcycles and their riders were blessed for the 2019 riding season. The day began with a great breakfast prepared and served by a great team of volunteers. Following the breakfast Pastor Jeff spent time blessing each person and each motorcycle and prayed a prayer of safety and refreshing for every mile that will be ridden. The motorcyclists and riders then went on a scenic ride led by our very own Road Captain Chris Young, and the day wrapped up with ice cream sundaes back at the church. We want to thank everyone who was involved in making this a great event again this year. And if you are a rider be sure to join us again next year!!

Questioning Evangelism

IMG_3898.JPG

On Saturday, March 23rd, we hosted our 3rd Questioning Evangelism. These are always great events that everyone is welcome to attend. Shari Bailey led the morning by using a lot of willing volunteers to present skits that portrayed many of the common scenarios we run into when we attempt to share our faith. We were then able to discuss these scenarios and come up with good questions to ask people we encounter, ways to be better listeners, and Biblical responses to some tough issues.
