Changed People, Change People

The Word Became Flesh

John 1: 1 – 18 (ESV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.  12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.  15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)   16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

Jesus had a human Body and a sensitive human soul, but a Divine Mind and not a human rational Mind

Hebrews 4: 15 (ESV)

we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Humanity                      Divinity

Divinity put on Humanity – Will

Matthew 26: 39 (ESV)

…going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

St. Gregory in his letter to Cledonius

That which is not taken up (or assumed) is not healed.

That which is united to God, that will be saved.

If half of Adam fell, also half will be taken up and saved. But if all [of Adam], all of his nature will be united [to God], and all of it will be saved.

Why does Christology matter?

Romans 7: 15 – 17 (NLT)

I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

Romans 8: 1 - 4 (ESV)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Biblical Insights on Government

1.              Government is intended for our good.

Romans 13: 1 (ESV)

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Government is intended to incentivize good conduct and to restrain evil.

Government officials are to be servants of God.

Romans 13: 4 (ESV)

For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Because God instituted government for our benefit and to restrain evil, we should:

1.              Be good citizens

2.              Pay our taxes

2.              Government is inherently flawed because of sinful humanity

3.              Periodically, government falls under demonic powers.

The Naked Communist

How should we respond when persecuted by the government?

Proverbs 27: 12 (NASB)

A prudent person sees evil and hides himself; but the naive proceed, and pay the penalty.

4.              Government if temporary and provisional.

Government is intended to incentivize good conduct

and to restrain evil.

Proverbs 29: 10 (NASB)

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked person rules, people groan.

Summary Statements:

1.              Patriotism NOT Utopianism

2.              Pay taxes even to ungodly governments

1 Peter 2: 13 (NASB)

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority.

1 Kings 12: 15 (NASB)

So the king did not listen to the people; because it was a turn of events from the Lord, in order to establish His word which the Lord spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

3.              God holds true authority

Romans 13: 1 (ESV)

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

4.              The church is called to influence culture

5.              The gospel MUST be our priority

Government is temporal,

Souls are eternal

6.              Obey God over government

7.              Salvation is not achieved by the government.

The world needs the church!

Government restrains,

but it doesn’t redeem

Government rewards,

But it doesn’t restore

Jesus isn’t coming back to take sides…

He’s coming back to take over!

Step Up and Grow Up

II Corinthians 13: 1 – 14 (ESV)

This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them —   3 since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.   4 For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.  5 Examine yourselves, see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test.  But we pray to God that you may not do wrong — not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed.  8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for.  10 For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down. 11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you. 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Four Traits of a Growing Christian

1.              Accusations need Confirmation

2 Corinthians 13: 1 (ESV)

Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

Deuteronomy 19: 15 (ESV)

A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.

1 Timothy 5: 19 (NLT)

Do not listen to an accusation against an elder unless it is confirmed by two or three witnesses.

We deserve to have our reputations protected from irresponsible or malicious people

2.              Truth necessitates Conversation

2 Corinthains 13: 2 (ESV)

I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them.

Truth can be hard to hear

Hard words are instrumental, indispensable, and valuable to help us mature as Christians.

God uses hard words of rebuke to lead us to repentance.

The Goal of Confrontation:

Return to godliness

Matthew 18: 20 (ESV)

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

3.              Salvation MUST be tested

2 Corinthians 13: 5 (ESV)

Examine yourselves, see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Paul indicates that it is possible for someone to THINK they’re a Christian …on their way to heaven…

when they’re not.

Matthew 7: 21 – 23 (NLT)

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.  22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’  23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

4. Relationships must be nourished.

2 Corinthians 13: 11 & 12 (ESV)

Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.
